Entonces, ¿por qué se dice que Finlandia tiene la mejor educación de Europa?

Entre otros factores, por los siguientes:

• Los centros tienen autonomía para organizar sus propios programas de estudios.
• Los profesores son respetados y valorados, tienen libertad sobre cómo impartir sus clases y qué material utilizar.
• Consideran que es más importante aprender a pensar que memorizar.
• No se busca fomentar la competencia entre alumnos ni las comparaciones.
• La educación es gratuita y accesible para todos.
• El alumnado tiene tiempo para todo, puesto que las jornadas lectivas son más cortas.
• La familia se implica en la educación de sus hijos y tienen ayudas para conciliar la vida laboral y familiar.
• Dan sus clases de forma divertida, con juegos y uso de recursos TIC, vídeos, cómics, música…frente a nuestro sistema tradicional de enseñanza.

Otro factor importante es que apuestan por las tecnologías de la información y comunicación como elemento clave en la formación del alumnado. Tanto es así, que hace unos meses saltaba la noticia de que Finlandia iba a eliminar de su currículo la escritura a mano en pro del teclado del ordenador. Los medios de comunicación y la comunidad educativa se revolucionaban, unos a favor del empleo de la escritura digital en las nuevas tecnologías, sugiriendo que la escritura manual se quedaba ya obsoleta con el avance tecnológico, y otros en contra, conscientes de la importancia que tiene la escritura a mano para adquirir destrezas, habilidades motoras finas y memoria.

Sin embargo, esta noticia, pese al gran revuelo que generó, había sido un malentendido: Finlandia no dejaba de enseñar a escribir a mano, sino que los niños aprenderían únicamente los trazos de la letra de imprenta, dejando como materia optativa la enseñanza de la letra seguida o caligrafía cursiva, puesto que en la práctica casi no es usada. Además, se establecía la mecanografía como asignatura obligatoria, considerada más útil para los escolares en su vida laboral. Para saber más sobre el sistema educativo finlandés, podéis ver este documental producido en 2011, que profundiza en la realidad educativa de Finlandia, un sistema que se ha situado entre los mejores de mundo en poco más de diez años y tras una profunda reforma.

También conviene resaltar que existen detractores del sistema educativo finlandés, que propugnan que Finlandia ha llevado a cabo un despliegue tecnológico que responde más bien a decisiones políticas y no tanto a las educativas. Particularmente, considero que no hay un modelo perfecto, sino que se debe coger lo bueno de cada uno y adaptarlo al propio sistema nacional.
